He was raised across the Warrior River in Northport, Alabama and he attended public schools in both Northport and Tuscaloosa. He lived briefly in Livingston, Texas and Sandestin, Florida. As a young man he worked for his father's general contracting firm before beginning a career in the "new" field of computers at age 18. His professional software development career spanned 23 years in Birmingham, Alabama. He briefly attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham, but like many of his contemporaries in the information technology field in the early 1980's, he did not complete a degree. His fast rise through the ranks to senior management positions precluded the need for a degree.

In 2010 he and his wife opened a small family owned motorsorts entertainment center in Danville, Virginia.
