Kendrick Artez Perkins (born September 12, 1991 in Clear Lake, Texas) is an American professional baseball outfielder who plays for the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball. He was a two sport athlete in high school and just completed his first minor league season with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox. High school accolades Perkins was a two-sport athlete, having played football and baseball at La Porte High School in La Porte in Harris County near Houston. Freshman year Baseball - Perkins batted .420 with 8 home runs his Freshman year at La Porte. At the age of 15, he was named First Team All-district, First Team All-greater Houston and the All Greater Houston Newcomer of the Year. Football - Perkins played junior varsity football as a Freshman. Sophomore year Baseball - Perkins batted .412 with 7 home runs as a Sophomore and was recognized by being named to the First Team All-district and First Team All-greater Houston teams. Football - Perkins led La Porte in rushing by gaining 450 yards with 3 touchdowns before having his season cut short with a broken foot. He only played in 6 games as a Sophomore, and was a starter in each of them. Junior year Baseball - Perkins batted .400 with 6 home runs as a Junior. In addition to being named First Team All-district and First Team All-greater Houston, Perkins was selected to play in the Texas All Juniors High School game and named First Team All-region. Football - During his Junior year, Perkins had the best rushing season of his career, gaining 1,876 yards and scoring 28 touchdowns. Aside from being named All-district, Perkins was named to the All Greater Houston Touchdown Club. Senior year Baseball - Heading into his Senior season, Perkins was named to Rawlings Pre-season All-American team. He followed that up by batting .421 with 5 home runs, and was selected for the Rawlings All-American team and First Team All-State. Football - Perkins decided to skip football his Senior year and focus on baseball. But, after two games, he returned to football and was backup to Junior Anthony Webb. Despite playing in fewer games and getting less playing times, Perkins rushed for 1,726 yards and 27 touchdowns, earning him Co-offensive Player of the Year, First Team All-State and All Greater Houston honors. Based on his high school achievements and dedication to the community, the City of La Porte official recognizes Perkins on December 14 of each year for "Kendrick Perkins Day". College vs. pro Upon graduation from La Porte High School, Perkins received scholarship offers for both football and baseball. He committed to Texas A&M with the intent of playing both sports for the Aggies, but kept his options for professional baseball open until after its draft. Perkins was selected in the 6th round (203 overall) of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox. His draft status fell as most MLB teams knew he would be difficult to sign. But on August 8, 2010, Perkins elected to forgo college and sign with the Red Sox. Professional career Perkins first professional season was in 2011 with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox. He played left field and batted .258 with 3 home runs and 19 RBIs.
