Kay Barnard is a farmer and Liberal Democrat politician from Somerset in the South West of England. She is also a director of a large publishing company which specialises in farming and food issues. Education Bernard has a doctorate in Biochemistry and has led research at both MIT and at Bristol University. Her work on structural tissues (such as collagen) has had impact in the fields of chronic diseases such as arthritis and diabetes. She was awarded a personal Fellowship by the National Kidney Research Fund. Politics Kay is a long time member of the Liberal Democrats, and has stood for and/or won many elected positions. She has been a Somerset County Councillor for many years, stood as PPC in Bristol South in 2005, stood for election to European Parliament in 2004 when she was third on the Lib Dem list for the South West, and is currently standing again in the upcoming European Election (June 4), this time as second on the list in the same area (see "European Election 2009" below). European Election 2009 Barnard is standing as the Liberal Democrat second candidate for the South-West constituency in the European Parliament election, on 4 June 2009. This means with the there is a real possibility she will gain a seat, the Lib Dems should only need a couple of extra percent of the vote to win 2 at the next election (although exactly how much depends on how the rest of the vote falls). She has promised to work to represent the South West, and being a farmer feels she would if elected be particularly able to represent the large farming community that the South West has. Along with other Liberal Democrats, wants to push for reform of the CAP wanting “a more fair, efficient and green policy” and a new policy that focuses on the sustainable development of the countryside”..
