Kate Kotler is a blogger on the ChicagoNow network, the Founding Editor for geek pop-culture website, Geek Girl on the Street and the Editor in Chief of FilmCatcher .
On ChicagoNow (a Chicago Tribune website) she authors the blog "The DIY Diva" providing help, guidance and advice with home improvement, craft and other DIY projects. This blog is loosely based on the "DIY Diva" column she formerly wrote for Stuart Schuffman's website Broke-Ass Stuart's Goddamn Website in 2009 and early 2010.
On Geek Girl on the Street, Kate is noted for her celebrity interviews in the format of the weekly column, "Geek of the Week." In 2010 she interviewed Neil Gaiman, Kari Byron, Christian Finnegan, Jonathan Ross, Charlaine Harris and Gail Simone among others. In addition to Geek Girl on the Street, Kotler writes the blog Food Pr0n Lovers , which is an affiliate of the Food Buzz network. She also is a paid how-to writer for Demand Studios, contributing most often to eHow.
Notably, Kotler published an exclusive interview with Kati Kim detailing Kim's 10 day ordeal stranded in the Oregon wilderness with her family in November 2006. Subsequently, in December 2007 Kotler appeared on Good Morning America on Kati Kim's behalf.
Kate Kotler wrote the stories "Confessions of a Professional Fire Eater" and "Bunk Bed Rock" for Fray: A Quarterly of True Stories in 2007 and 2008. She also has contributed to RealMental.org under the pen name Muriel Lipke. She has contributed numerous articles and columns to Bitch Buzz, DollyMix, Girly Geekdom, Attention Deficit Delirium, Broke-Ass Stuart's Goddamn Website and Creative Humans magazine.
Kotler's writing focus is mainly on geek pop-culture, crafting and food, though she occasionally does write about fashion and politics.
Related Career Information
Kate worked as a professional actor, director and theater teacher from 1991 to 2006. Notable accomplishments include appearing as a featured SAG background artist on the Fox television series Boston Public and Ally McBeal in 2000-2001; assisting in producing the first and second San Francisco Improv Festival; performing in the improv troupes The New Humor Group and The Beatnik Syndicate; and working as a professional fire eater. She also contributed the voice for the character Helena to the independent movie, Stupid Cupid in 2006.
In 2006, Kotler interned at SHIFT Communications in San Francisco. From there she went on to become the Content and Community Manager at Meez.com. When the company experienced financial crisis in the fall of 2008, Kotler was laid off.
Personal life
Kotler was born Katherine Emily Galen on 15 November 1973 in Elgin, Illinois. She is the oldest of three children. She lived in Elgin until the age of 12. Her family moved to Kent, Ohio in 1985. Kate's mother is a distinguished professor of education and her father was the Dean of Undergraduate Studies at Kent State University. Both retired in 2010.
Kate graduated from Kent Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1991. Subsequently, she attended Kent State and the University of Akron as a Theater Major.
She currently resides in Chicago, Illinois.
