Kamiloiki Elementary School
|
Profile
Kamiloiki Elementary School is located on a hill above Kamiloiki Valley, in the heart of Hawaii Kai. It is on the south eastern side of the island of Oahu. Kamiloiki, which means "the little milo tree", opened in 1970 and has a population of close to 500.
According to legend, when the Gods were busy making the Hawaiian Islands, they decided to make a special tree that was sacred to them. They wanted a tree with a strong stem to represent their strength, and one that had fruit to represent their fertility. They wanted one with flowers that captured the morning sun's brightness and the colors of the sunset. Most important, however, they wanted a tree with heart-shaped leaves to represent their love for the islands.
The symbol of Kamiloiki School is a tri-leaved branch of the Milo tree with a flower in the center. A tiled mural with the symbol can be seen on the Library building. It was presented to the school by the Class of 1985 and the tiles were made by Barry Nakasone.

Library
The library serves the students and staff of Kamiloiki Elementary School. All grade levels, PreKindergarten through fifth, visit the library on a weekly basis to borrow books and participate in standards-based lessons. The library program integrates the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards III and the General Learner Outcomes with the national Standards for the 21st Century Learner, developed by the American Association of School Librarians.
Location
Kamiloiki School is nestled near Kalama Valley at the heart of Hawaii Kai in Eastern Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The faculty, staff, students, and parents work together to promote academic excellence, the cultivation of self-esteem, and the development of problem-solving and critical thinking skills. With support from the entire school community, Kamiloiki has continued to promote high academic standards, as evidenced by the students' SAT scores, good attendance and mutual respect exhibited by both students and teachers. It has received accolades as a Fine Arts and Technology School through the maintenance of strong programs in instrumental and vocal music, art, and connectivity with the world through our school-wide networking system (LAN and WAN). School Community Based Management is an integral part of the governance structure and oversees global functions and activities for our valued stakeholders.
Information & Initiatives
POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT - Kamiloiki Elementary started to implement the Positive Behavior Support program in the school year 2003-2004 where students, faculty, and staff helped to contribute what they felt were appropriate behavior expectations for various locations on our campus. All teachers and students are helping to maintain these expectations. You may view our complete Positve Behavior Support Chart to see the expected behaviors.
HAWAII WRITING & ASSESSMENT PROGRAM - Hawaii Writing and Assessment Program is an initiative that the Department of Education began a while back. It standardizes the way teachers assess student work. HW&A is a program that has helped to develop our current writing standards. You can view some of our work samples.
VICKI SPANDEL'S 6 TRAITS OF WRITING - We will be replacing the Hawaii Writing Assessment (HWA) with Vicki Spandel's 6 Traits of Writing. Spandel's 6 Traits correlate very closely to the HWA rubric. We were trained in Spandel's 6 Traits in the Fall of 2003. We received a binder from the training that included many writing strategies and assessment ideas. The students will still receive a schoolwide annual assessment on writing in the Spring using Vicki's 6 Traits. We will also continue to collect exemplar writing pieces and publish them on the web.
CRITERIA SETTING & ASSESSMENT - Can you hit a target if you don't know what it is? Most of us would have a hard time doing this.
