Jumpscare

A Jump Scare is a technique used in horror films and video games which attempts to scare the viewer by surprising them with a sudden and unexpected event. While many like jump scares, some describe them as a lazy way to frighten viewers. Successful jump scares rely on a previous scene which makes the viewer believe that nothing scary is about to happen, often lowering the soundtrack to near silent or using scary music.
Some films and games focus primarily on jump scares to provide their horror element. Video game Daylight was described as being a "vehicle for jump scares" and Drag Me to Hell contained jump scares throughout.<ref name=healthy/>
