De Silva worked in the NHS for more than a decade and was a consultant surgeon for Oculo-Facial Plastic Surgery at St George's Hospital in 2011. He developed a face mapping tool to objectively assess beauty using a modern twist on our understanding of the golden ratio. This research led to the development of the Phi-Lift, a treatment for non-surgical facelifts. De Silva reviews numerous articles for the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) and The European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery (EAFPS). He has co-authored a number of scientific papers including research into spontaneous silent sinus syndrome and research into orbital blowout fractures. De Silva has been seen frequently on TV including appearances on Sky News and on ITV's Lorraine, discussing facial surgery. Early life Julian De Silva was born in London, England. He was educated at Hampton School in London before studying for his medical degree (MBBS) at Guy's, King's and St Thomas's Medical School, graduating in 1999. De Silva went on to teach anatomy at Guy's Hospital before working at various London hospitals including Great Ormond Street Hospital, Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital. In 2011, his thesis on The Evaluation Of Fibrin Tissue Adhesive For Skin Closure Following Eyelid Surgery outlined the research and preparatory work for the use of fast-healing tissue glue in cosmetic surgery procedures. De Silva used requests from patients to develop a composite of the world's most desirable face. Based on the artistic theory of the golden section, Hollywood actress Amber Heard was judged closest to perfection. In December 2016, De Silva's analysis of the mouth styles most requested by cosmetic surgery patients seeking lip surgery was widely reported in the media. According to De Silva's research, Taylor Swift's "peaked cupid's pout" was the most popular, closely followed by Angelina Jolie's distinctive look. De Silva said the Duchess of Cambridge had prompted a rise in rhinoplasty from patients who desired her “mathematically perfect nose” with its 106-degree nasal tip rotation. Among his scientific and research papers, he has written on the cyclodiode treatment of neovascular glaucoma (2007), predicting visual outcome following retinectomy for retinal detachment (2008) and aesthetic canthal suspension (2014).
