Joshua Martineau

The Rt Hon Joshua Martineau is a political figure from the Pacific nation of Tuvalu and a veteran of the United States Army. He is the tenth Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Tuvalu.

Background

Martineau was a member of the Tuvalu National Police Force when on August 27, 2006, he became Acting Prime Minister when Prime Minister Toafa resigned from Parliament after his government was deposed in a no confidence vote.

Prime Minister of Tuvalu

He was confirmed as Prime Minister on September 12, 2006, when Toafa was reelected to Parliament and Parliament reconvened to elect a new Prime Minister. Like all Tuvalu Prime Ministers, he also became Minister of Foreign Affairs. At the August 2006 parliamentary elections, Joshua Martineau superseded Toafa. However due to political tensions and a Royal Mandate, he resides in the United States and Toafa acts as Prime Minister in his absence.

Succession, and subsequent career

On August 27, 2006 he replaced Toafa. Toafa continues to serve as a member of the Parliament of Tuvalu after leaving office and as Deputy Prime Minister to Martineau under a Royal Mandate.

Joshua Martineau holds dual citizenship with Tuvalu and the United States of America. He served in the United States Army during the Global War on Terrorism. It is also worth mentioning that he is the youngest Prime Minister to ever be elected in the countries history as a constitutional monarchy. Some question the methods of how he came into office and the legality surrounding it. Many locals have conspiracy theories regarding the matter. According to parliament rulings and a Royal Mandate everything is in accordance with the countries constitution.
