Joseph W. Burrus

Joe Burrus was an escape artist in the San Francisco area who died October 30, 1990, while attempting to be buried alive. There was a camera crew present, as his attempt was being filmed for a tv show.

Incident
He was contained inside an acrylic glass clear box, or coffin, of his own construction. After it was lowered into a hole, his crew began filling the hole with dirt around the sides of the coffin. Then they began filling the hole with wet concrete.

Joe had practiced this stunt before, but only with dirt, not with concrete. As a result, he had failed to correctly estimate the higher weight of wet concrete versus that of dry earth. Thus, as the concrete was being poured into the hole, there was a sudden drop of height as the coffin collapsed.

It took some time but the safety crew was able to excavate the concrete-filled hole enough to reach Joe, at which point he was long dead.
