Joseph Bongiorno is an American double bassist who has appeared as the principal bassist of the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra and in over 50 other musical ventures. Education Bongiorno began playing the double bass at the age of 12, and went on to study under Homer Mensch at the Juilliard School of Music. Career Bongiorno's career highlights include recording the Broadway cast album of West Side Story under the direction of Leonard Bernstein, and serving as principal bassist of the Brooklyn Philharmonic. In 2008, he became an associate professor of string studies at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development at NYU. He retired from this position in 2019. He has also appeared with the American Composers Orchestra, the Westchester Philharmonic, the Pierrot Consort, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Mostly Mozart Festival, Maverick Concerts, Arbor Chamber Music, Norfolk/Yale Summer Chamber Festival, North Country Chamber Players, the Knights, Bargemusic, the American Ballet Theatre, the New York City Opera Orchestra, the American Symphony, the Group for Contemporary Music and the Spoleto Festival Orchestra.
