Jon Gunnells, a 2007 Michigan State University graduate is an American writer who was named runner-up in the first ever McDonald's Next Great Sportswriter competition on FOXSports.com, the MSN-affiliated website for Fox Sports (USA). The general readership of FOXSports.com voted Jon second, behind Ty Hildenbrandt a 2004 Penn State University graduate. Gunnells has written for a variety of newspapers and websites including Scout.com where he covered Detroit Tigers Triple-A affiliate Toledo Mud Hens during the 2007 International League season and the Detroit Free Press where he worked as a web producer. While working at the Detroit Free Press, Gunnells blogged about NCAA football and NCAA basketball and covered minor league hockey, high school sports, and college basketball for the print edition of the Detroit Free Press. After his stint with the Detroit Free Press, Gunnells spent a year and a half as a web editor for the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus where his site, Livingstondaily.com was named Web Site of the Year by the Michigan Press Association. Gunnells currently works as a copy writer for the marketing department at Burns & Wilcox, the No.1 MGA/Wholesaler and insurance broker in North America. Gunnells has also freelanced for many publications and web sites including Wise Guide Books and FanSherpa.com.
