John A. Wexler is an American numismatist and author. He is best known for his work identifying and cataloging die varieties and doubled dies on United States coins. Career Wexler is the creator of the website doubleddie.com, which catalogs the various varieties he had attributed in different coin series. He is the author of the monthly column Varieties Notebook in Coin World which appears in the third issue each month. Wexler began collecting in 1958, and began his interest in die varieties in 1971. During the 1970s and early 1980s, he served as "Hubbing Variety Statistician" for CONE, and began writing for their club publication Errorgram. His first book, The Encyclopedia of Doubled Dies, Volume 1, was published in 1978, which was followed by a second volume in 1981. Wexler is the co-creator of Error-Variety News, a monthly magazine dedicated to errors and die varieties, and author of The RPM Book and The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die, both considered among the standard references on their respective subjects. His work has appeared in several numismatic publications including Numismatic News, and Coins. In June 2022, Wexler was part of a team of five numismatists who re-classified the 1943 over 42 Lincoln cent as an overdate variety, in addition to it's previously known doubled die status.
