John P. Lawrence

John Paul Lawrence (born 3 July 1958) is a former senior advisor on terrorist organisations in the middle east to the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS or MI6).
Dr Lawrence was recruited into the Information Research Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and subsequently served in MI6. During his time with MI6 he served in the Middle and Far East. He was also a regular intelligence advisor to Margaret Thatcher at COBRA meetings during the 1980s. His last known Foreign office appointment was with the Corps of Queen's Messengers.
Educated at Eastbrook, Bancroft and Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he served with British Special Forces units and with the Special Air Service in the Falklands War of 1982.
He was decorated by U.S. Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger for services to US forces in Lebanon in 1983-1984. He was also linked with Col Oliver North and the Iran-contra affair.
