John Laforet is a community activist in Scarborough, Canada. He is an active member of the Liberal Party of Canada and the President of the Scarborough—Guildwood Liberal Riding Association. Prior to seeking election to Toronto City Council in 2006, he worked for Brad Duguid, MPP and Parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. He has also served as Michael Ignatieff's political organizer for Scarborough during the 2006 Liberal Leadership election, although he later endorsed Gerrard Kennedy.
Having been politically active for much of his youth, he ran for Toronto City Council in the 2006 municipal election and was defeated by Paul Ainslie. A videoproduced by his campaign was credited with exposing a misleading statement made by Councillor Ainslie at City Council. The video shows Ainslie promising not to run in the 2006 election if appointed to a vacancy. Ignoring his pledge, Ainslie ran for City Council anyways.
After losing the municipal election, John Laforet went to work at COMPAS Research and became Field Manager. He worked on a number of research projects related to public policy and democracy in Canada.
John Laforet currently maintains a community blog Laforet.ca where he writes about emerging issues facing his community.
