Johan of Limburg Hohenlimburg Broich, probst of Werden
|
The youngest son of Count Diederik IV and Hendrika van Wisch, Johan van Limburg, born about 1421, was entrusted by his parents at the age of about ten to Abbot Aleff van Spiegelberg of the St. Ludger monastery in Werden. After his education he was probst from 1436 to 7 July 1471. Married Anna Borchartsz. Two sons were born, Diederick and Adolf. Descendants of Adolf were city administrators of Essen and Duisburg, stewards-general of the county of Lingen and officers in States of the United Netherlands “.. ten Dienste Deser Landen”. Johan van Limburg probst of Werden In the account book of the monastery the costs are recorded for clothing, tabard, shoes, sheets, bedsheet and paper made for him since 1432. “Item den tabberd Jonkheer Van Lymborgh, jedem eyn bedded myt eyne solve, eyn pas lakene eyn nije scharfft und eyn bedd sack costed to ….” On May 22, 1436 Johan is mentioned in a charter as probst "in Zele" with as mentor, Probst Ernst van Oitgenbach. Prior Johan van de Grafschap, acting abbot, together with treasurer Johan Stecke and Konrad van Gleichen, handed over the priest's church in Schapen to the Cologne cleric Henrick Lenger. A few years later in 1441, he succeeds Ernst van Oitgenbach as probst of Werden. From April 29, 1441, Johan van Limburg appears in many preserved charters and deeds. He is a witness in March 1442, when his brother Hendrik made agreements with Duke Adolf van Keef about Broich Castle. The last deed of probst Johan dates from March 11, 1471. He died in 1472 in Castle Broich with his brother Hendrik On November 13, 1473, Wilhelm van Reifferscheid was successively probst van Werden. Anna Borckhartsz of the Schenkenbusch Anna, daughter of Herman Borckhartsz zu Schenkenbusch at the Sprinker in Bredeney. An estate, named after Johan Schenck, where he was enfeoffed by the abbey of Werden in 1413. A forest estate with “huys” and “Vrijhove” located on the Sprinker in Bredeney near Werden, on the right riverbank of the Ruhr. Herman's father, Herman Borckhartsz senior and mother Elsen succeeded Johan Schenck and were in turn enfeoffed with the Schenkenbusch "feudum bonum ministeriale" in 1437. Marriage between Johan and Anna About 1465 at the age of about forty-five, Johan was secretly "verbriefft und verbunden" with Margaretha Anna Borckhartz of the Schenkenbusch. Johan and Anna had two sons, Diederik and Adolf van Limburg born few years later. It must have been love between Johan and Anna, because Johan married her. Their sons and grandsons Van Limburg, maintained good ties with the Borckharts. Quite exceptional at the time for a noble man in such a high position. There are other examples for instance of lower-ranking canons from Cologne Cathedral who left their beloved in Cologne behind. The marriage between Johan and Anna was not made public and their marriage document was only revealed on April 22, 1553. Then appeared before the Abbot Herman van Holten and the Convent of the Abbey, the noble Wolter van Braitbent, a lawyer who showed a deed on parchment and stamps, of the former mayors and the judge Rutger van Gahlen in which the statement: “Richter tho Dorsten van wegen dr.Johan Amerdinge soen w. Bater Lobbe genannten versegelte dairvan dat der sij dairinne Johan und Anna tho parmentschap. ……. So gedancken dasz probst Johan und Anna voorseids wettlich verbriefft und verbunden.“ Johann of Limburg, ± 1421 - 1472 Probst zu Werden married in 1465 with Anna Borckhartz zu Schenkenbush, Bredeney on the Ruhr.
