Jimmy Autrey

Jimmy Autrey II (born June 21, 1980), is an American author from the small mountain town of Burnsville, North Carolina. He is the son of Jimmy and Judy Autrey. He has one younger brother, Alex Justin Autrey. Autrey graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2002 with a double major in English and journalism. He went on to complete the post-B.A. elementary education teacher licensure program at the University of North Carolina at Asheville in April 2005. Autrey's published works include the poetry book Decadently Wholesome: 100 Poems About Life and Love (2001) and the horror novel What Big Teeth You Have: A Vampire Tale (2004).

As a young child Autrey attended South Toe Elementary School and East Yancey Middle School. Autrey's first job was as a salesperson at Roses Department Store in Burnsville, North Carolina (from 1997 to 1998). He graduated with Honors from Mountain Heritage High School in Burnsville, NC, in May 1998, then left Yancey County to pursue a college degree. Autrey was the first person in his immediate family to ever graduate from high school.

During his college years, Autrey worked as an intern for several organizations, including the Mitchell News-Journal in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. After college Autrey worked as a reporter and photographer at the Lake Norman Times newspaper in Mooresville, North Carolina. He was the newspaper's only full-time reporter at the time. While working as a reporter, Autrey often covered news stories relating to local schools. Autrey changed career directions in June of 2003, deciding to go back to college and pursue a teaching license. Autrey worked as a 3rd grade teacher at Hillsborough Elementary School in Hillsborough, North Carolina, from July 2005 to June 2007.

Autrey moved to the Washington, D.C., Metro area in July 2007. He continued his work as an educator at that time.
