Jenny Lindsay

Jenny Lindsay (born 1982) is a Scottish spoken word poet, who currently lives in Scotland with her two cats, Huxley and Morris. Lindsay has worked in the Scottish poetry scene for over a decade, releasing several published books of poetry, and participating in numerous competitions throughout her career, for which she has received critical acclaim and a small cult following comprised mainly of women. In 2012, she was BBC Slam Champion. In 2017, she was awarded the Creative Edinburgh Award. Lindsay has taken part in mentoring youth poets throughout her career, working with the Paisley charity CREATE as part of a project entitled ‘No Words Wasted’ in 2017, through which she coached several young Scottish poets to write poetry about the climate crisis. The project opened at Sma Shot Day in Paisley in 2017 with live performances from the poets. Lindsay returned to live performances in May 2022 after a two-year hiatus, performing work from her book This Script.
Controversy
Jenny Lindsay has been accused of anti-trans comments in the past, as a result of a complaint she made against an article from The Skinny, in which the journalist encouraged violence against TERFs, in this case lesbian activists at pride. Lindsay has since responded to the intense criticism, speaking out against the violent threats made against her which caused her to move from central Edinburgh to the coast of Scotland. Lindsay had a crowdfunder made in her name by supporters to help recoup the payments for cancelled work as a result of the controversy. Lindsay has argued that the accusations of transphobia resulted from a misunderstanding and false evidence being created against her to support this notion, however remains an advocate of ‘Sex-based Feminism’, which aims to exclude transwomen from feminism.
