Jay Ovittore

Jay Ovittore (born May 17, 1973) a New Jersey native, began playing percussion professionally at age 13. He moved to North Carolina in 1990 with his family. He later returned to New York to work for Simon & Schuster's prestigious publishing firm doing audio editing. The combination of the tragedy of September 11th with the ailing health of his father brought him back to North Carolina in 2001 and started his own painting and contracting business.

Ovittore began writing a webblog in 2004, which quickly gained local and national attention with posts picked up by The Guardian Online and Media Critic/ NYU Professor Jay Rosen. In Jay’s blog posts, he has covered both national and local issues. Ovittore conducted opposition research for the Brad Miller for Congress campaign in 2004. His investigations resulted in Miller's opponent, Vernon Robinson having to admit his campaign's incompetence to Federal Election laws and repay donations made over the legal limits. His investigative work brought him into contact with several officials including North Carolina Representative Pricey Harrison who convinced him to get more involved in the political process.

Ovittore worked his way through the ranks of the Guilford County Democratic Party holding positions on its board and being elected President of the Guilford County Young Democrats. After an unsuccessful run for US Congress in North Carolina's 6th Congressional District in 2008, Ovittore focused on improving the lives of the people of Greensboro.

Ovittore sits on the Human Relations Commission for the City of Greensboro, NC and is the Chair of the Housing Committee. Currently, he is working with the City of Greensboro and the North Carolina General Assembly to eradicate substandard housing by protecting Greensboro's RUCO ordinance. Ovittore also sits on committee discussing appropriate City response regarding the Truth and Reconciliation Process.
