Jason Colson (born January 6, 1984 in Rochester, New York) was an American football all-purpose back for the West Virginia Mountaineers, who started his career at runningback and ended it at slot receiver. Colson plays semi-professional football for the West Virginia Gladiators. Early life At Rochester's Edison Tech, Jason Colson excelled at sports. Gaining 1,418 yards and 31 touchdowns as a senior, Colson earned all-greater Rochester pick, was second-team all-state, Section V player of the year, and 10NBC Scholar-Athlete. College career Freshman season Jason Colson did not see varsity action as a freshman in 2002 at West Virginia University, but earned Danny Van Etten Award as the top offensive performer on West Virginia's scout squad and was rookie of the week against Syracuse. Colson finally saw action as a red-shirt freshman in 2003, registering 235 yards and three scores, while playing backup to Quincy Wilson and Kay-Jay Harris. Colson registered a two-yard touchdown against ECU, a 35-yard kick return against Miami, a 28-yard run against UCF, and a 56-yard game with a 26-yard run against Syracuse. Colson got a start against Temple, where he rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns while Wilson was injured. Sophomore season In his sophomore year, 2004, Colson shared time with Kay-Jay Harris, on the West Virginia offense that featured Rasheed Marshall at quarterback and Chris Henry at receiver. Colson played in every game, recording 706 yards and six scores. Colson started against ECU, where he registered 64 yards and two touchdowns, and against UCF, he recorded 108 yards and a 1-yard touchdown run. Colson tallied 69 all-purpose yards against Maryland, 37 yards rusing and a score against James Madison, 111 yards against Cincinnati, 113 yards against Syracuse, and 103 yards for his 3rd consecutive 100-yard rushing game against Rutgers. Junior season As a junior in 2005, with the loss of Harris to the NFL Draft, Colson had high expectations to start. But recruits that off-season, Jason Gwaltney and Steve Slaton, challenged Colson for the job. Gwaltney and Colson had the battle through the first half of the season, where Colson only totaled 120 yards and a score. Gwaltney posted good yardage, but then against Virginia Tech in the mid-point of the season, Slaton burst on the scene. After that game, Slaton became the starter. Senior season As a senior in 2006, Colson was moved to the receiver depth chart as well as runningback. Colson only totaled 40 yards rushing, his best game was a 26-yard game against Eastern Washington, but totaled no receiving stats. This year was the worst, statistic-wise, for Colson in his five-year career at West Virginia. Professional career Colson left West Virginia, eager for the 2007 NFL Draft. No scouts placed Colson in the draft, thus projected as becoming an undrafted free agent. Colson followed in the scouts' predictions, being undrafted. He now plays semi-professional football in Morgantown, West Virginia for the West Virginia Gladiators. In 2007, Colson was a third team USFA All-Star, and was a first-team all-star in 2008.
