Japoodle

The Japoodle is a Designer breed, the offspring of a Poodle and a Japanese Spitz. The Japoodle is a new and relatively unknown breed in the Poodle crossbreed line up and came about after other poodle crossbreeds such as Cavoodle's and Labradoodle's saw great success as family pets for their exceptional temperaments and low-shed coats. Japoodles are best known for their high energy and intelligence, but also their difficult coats.
Appearance
The Japoodle is a cross between a Toy Poodle or Miniature poodle, and a Japanese Spitz. Given the combination of dogs a japoodles coat is often on the more difficult side to care for ; Japanese spitz coats are long, full and have a lot of fall out, while poodles coats are short and curly with minimal fall out due to being hair rather than fur. A Japoodles coat is often a difficult combination of the two, leaning more towards one side or the other and always with mass shedding due to the Japanese spitz genes. Japoodles are also characterized as having short floppy ears and curly tails, giving them the appearance of a teddy bear which is why they are slowly gaining popularity as a breed. They come in a selection of colours, ranging from Chestnut through to pure while ; the most common being a light Caramel color.
Temperament
The japoodles temperament is high energy and very loving; they express a great desire for constant attention and human interaction, always flowing their master and staying vigilant by their side. The breed is overall very intelligent and able to easily pick up a wide range of tricks and training techniques. They do however inherit the yappy nature of both poodles and Japanese spitz's so new owners need to learn to control this behavior while the dog is young or else it will get out of control and become impossible to break later in life.
Activity level and grooming
Japoodles do need a light exercise routine to maintain their good health and to burn off excessive energy that may otherwise turn into destructive behavior. They do not possess great stores of energy so a short walk around the block or throwing the ball in the back yard for a 30 minuets should more than be enough to keep them healthy. They have a high maintenance coat and will need consistent brushing and clipping in order to maintain a healthy coat free of tangles and mattes. The coat can be tricky to clip due to the combination of coat types and should be taken to a groomer for a clean professional cut.
Health and lifespan
You can expect to enjoy the company of your japoodle for 13-15 years with a good diet and regular exercise. As a smaller breed they are susceptible to excessive weight gain at a rapid rate so great care should be taken to monitor their diet and weight to prevent health complications later in life such as heart disease, heart failure, fatty liver disease as well as poor dental hygiene and arthritis of the joints. poodles are known sufferers of many eye diseases including Optic nerve hypoplasia and Progressive retinal atrophy. However, because the Japoodle is a crossbreed it is somewhat less likely to develop these health issues due to Hybrid Vigor, however it is still a good idea to take your dog to the vet for regular check ups.The more reputable breeders actively attempt to breed out known genetic complications such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy using DNA disease testing.
