Jan Olav Reither

Jan Olav Reither (20 May, 1929—4 April, 2004) was a Norwegian architect. He lived in Bergen.
Reither was one of the most productive architects in Norway after World War II. He designed and built 600 houses, which is a very high number during a career of 30 years. He was qualified as an Architect at the Technical University of Trondheim in 1957.

Personal life

Reither was the son of Alfred Reither, an engineer who introduced the live saving procedure to dive into smoke filled rooms at the fire department of the City Council of Bergen, and Olga Biering Larsen.

During his time at the technical university he become engaged and later married to Maj Vogt Stenersen, also an architect. During the period 1958 - 1965 they had 3 children.

Works

Jan Olav Reither houses are found all across Norway, but most of them are clustered in Bergen. Some major works are the Ytrebygda School, Rudolf Steiner School, Lagunen Shopping Centre, Garnes School, the commercial building Marken 3 (“Mekka”) , and many private homes.

Political career

Jan Olav Reither was also a politician. He was for a long time member of the City Council, and the County Council, representing the Liberal Party of Norway (Venstre).
He played a key role in the conservation of the old city of Bergen, Bryggen (which is now on the UNESCO list of protected heritage), and the neighbourhood Marken in particular.
With his wide professional and political contacts he contributed in many ways to the positive development of the city of Bergen.
