James Wardell

James Wardell (born 1979) is an English photojournalist, war photographer, videographer and creative director.

James Wardell attended Bishop Vesey's Grammar School and studied English Literature under the English poet and diarist R. F. Langley. In 1998 he started his undergraduate studies at University College, Durham University and after graduating in Geography (BSc Hons) moved from his home town of Sutton Coldfield to start work as an advertising executive in 2001 at the global advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi London. In 2005, he moved to Barcelona, Spain and began working as a freelance photographer. In 2008, Wardell covered his first overseas assignment in Afghanistan working with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. He has documented a variety of conflicts and social issues, spending time in Afghanistan, The Bahamas, India, Italy, Northern Africa, Iberian Peninsula, United States of America shooting pictures of war, social unrest, poverty, and images of socio-political issues (pollution, crime and punishment) in Western Europe and Central Asia.
Wardell works for international media agencies, for example Sunday Express where he covered behind the scenes at Cirque du Soleil.
Whilst on assignment with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime he was present during the carbomb attack on the Indian Embassy in Kabul. He also compiled a photo essay on the conditions of orphans living in Kabul´s children´s orphanage that was used to increase charity donations to the institute.
