James W. Essig is an American police officer and administrator, and is the chief of The Detectives Bureau in the NYPD. In this capacity he oversees the majority of the department's detectives in every precinct. He has focused much of his career on suppressing gun violence. He was an “early architect” of the city's precision policing program, which aims to single out the primary drivers of violence. On March 12, 2021, it was announced that Essig would become the NYPD's 27th Chief of Detectives. Early life Essig was raised in Queens, started is career in law enforcement as a patrolmen in upper Manhattan. The young officer was awarded a medal for valor for a 1985 rescue of a woman trapped after an upper Manhattan crane collapsed. He later became the commander of the 41st and 44th precincts in the Bronx. Also, commanding the Gun Violence Suppression Division and the Violence Reduction Task Force and various other commands, including narcotics. Education Essig is a graduate of John Jay College and of the Police Management Institute at Columbia University.
