Captain J. Basil Read, III, U.S. Navy (Ret.) served as Superintendent of Wentworth Military Academy and College in Lexington, Missouri from 2007-2008. Captain Read is the son of Fred and Lauretta Read, and is a native of Park Hills, Kentucky. Captain Read enlisted in the United States Navy in 1975 and served on the frigate USS MCCANDLESS (FF-1084). Selected for the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC), Captain Read attended the University of Mississippi, where he graduated in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in History. Designated as a Surface Warfare Officer, Captain Read served in a variety of sea going billets to include Electrical Officer, Damage Control Assistant and Personnel Officer in USS WILLIAM H. STANDLEY (CG 32); Chief Engineer in USS MERRILL (DD 976); Material Officer for Commander DESTROYER SQUADRON 31; Flag Secretary for Commander THIRD FLEET; and Executive Officer USS PAUL F. FOSTER (DD 964). His sea-going career culminated in command of the Destroyer USS STUMP (DD 978). While in command, STUMP deployed to the Persian Gulf to enforce UN sanctions against Iraq and received the prestigious ‘Bloodhound’ Award designating her as the best Anti-Submarine Warfare ship in the Atlantic Fleet. Ashore, Captain Read served as Head of an Intelligence Division at the U.S. Atlantic Command, as a Senior Planner for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and as Director of Operations, Plans and Policy for all Naval activities in the Caribbean and Latin America. While in this position, he also served as the Deputy Commander of Task Force 47 and the Commander of Task Group 83.1. Prior to his retirement, he was assigned as the Professor of Naval Science and Commanding Officer of the NROTC Unit at the University of Missouri. Captain Read holds Navy Subspecialties in Anti-Submarine Warfare, International Relations, Intelligence, and Political-Military Affairs. He also has extensive experience in marine propulsion engineering. He is a graduate of the Naval War College, the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and Salve Regina University. He holds masters degrees in National Security and Strategic Studies; National Resource Management; and International Relations. In addition, he holds a graduate certificate in Information Strategies from the National Defense University.
