J-P E. Mattila

Jukka-Pekka Ensio Mattila (born 13 August 1963 in Helsinki, Finland) Finnish citizen, married with three children.
Entrepreneur and former sports figure, international consultant and president of Concept Design & Consulting, world champion in Offshore Class 1 power boat racing (1992). Nordic and national Champion in 1990.
Mr. J-P Mattila started as an entrepreneur at the young age of 15 by introducing the sport of Windsurfing to his native country Finland.
After completing his studies at the SYK in Helsinki he moved into real estate, studied architecture and international business administration. He has been involved in several property development companies in Finland, Belgium, Portugal, France, Venezuela, Thailand, Malaysia and Dominican Republic. The Notareal Group Oy, was a group of companies that started as a start-up enterprise in 1985 and turned into a group operating in road building (Assa-asfaltti Oy) kitchen manufacturing (Ykkossisuste Oy), Golf course development (Notarak Oy) to a ware house hotel operation (Leobragge Oy). In 1990 the group employed nearly 400 people and and had a turn over exceeding 400 million FIM. The name of the company derives from two English words "Notary" and "Real" Estate, as is stated on the group annual report from 1989.
From 1991 till 1996 Mr. Mattila was in charge of the business development of Finnscrew Finland Ltd - a Finnish propulsion manufacturer established in 1952. Mr. Mattila headed the expansion of this group into Russia and Malaysia. Finnscrew Finland was the technology leader in ship and yacht propeller technology during that time. His employment with Finnscrew ended when he was appointed the CEO of a high-tech spin off of Finnscrew - the Robotic Technology Systems PLC in London.
Mr. Mattila became one of the creators and board member of Robotic Technology Systems (RTS) PLC, listed on London Stock Exchange, United Kingdom. This company was a start-up technology venture, that possessed some advanced software solutions involving machine vision aided production automation and robotics. RTS grew in five years (1995-2000) from a small start up of 6 people into one of the largest production automation groups. In year 2000 the RTS group employed over 1800 professional people, 450 of which in Finland, and had a market capitalization exceeding 1 billion US dollars. The company's major clients are Nokia, Volvo, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Rolls Royce and Pilkington. RTS was considered the technology leader in its field at the time. The core technology consisted of machine vision guided production automation.
In the 1990s Mr. Mattila got involved in a large banking scandal following the demise of the Finnish banking system in 1991. The 90 billion FIM government bail out that followed, shook the whole Finnish society. In a nearly decade long legal battle results varied from an acquittal and rejection of charges against Mr. Mattila in 1997 to a total overturn and conviction by the Appeal court in July 2000, which sentenced him to a 6 years imprisonment of which 3 years would be served. Mr. Mattila managed to remain at large until May 2003. Mr. Mattila was arrested and deported from the Dominican Republic in June 2003, and started serving his sentence in Finland.
Before moving to the Dominican Republic Mr. Mattila filed a complaint with the European Court of Human rights, because the unprecedented fluctuations in his case. It took the European Court of Human Rights nearly 5 years to make their decision in the complaint submitted by Mr. Mattila. In autumn 2006 the ECHR reached their verdict and convicted the Finnish government for violating the human rights of Mr. Mattila and as a result obliged the Finnish government to pay him financial compensation.
United Nations issued a Human rights report about the court cases in Finland during the 1990s and stated that it was not possible to obtain a fair trial in these politically charged processes. Mr. Mattila's case is a good example of such a case where the Appeal court decides to go against all presented evidence in the lower courts and chooses to convict the defendant against previous acquital under political pressure. Finnish government has been convicted since for several dozens of similar violations.
Mr. Mattila's current company, Concept Design & Consulting (CDC), operates in the areas of international business development consultation and venture capital funding.CDC is involved in real estate development, architecture and industrial design projects. After the earthquake in Haiti on the 12th of January 2010, CDC has been involved in the relief effort and Mr. Mattila has participated in the reconstruction work on the ground. According to a press release dated on the 2nd of April, he is currently heading an international team of consultants and engineers with the plan to rebuild the camps around Port-au-Prince..
