Islington Boxing Club

Islington Boxing Club also known as Islington Boys Club and Islington Amateur Boxing Club is an amateur Boxing Club based in Islington, North London.
History
Islington Boxing Club began in January 1974 known then Kings Cross Amateur Boxing Club. They were based at the York Way Court which nowadays is the home to Times ABC. Within 2 years of first opening the club required expansion due to the increasing membership and in 1976 they moved to the Michael Sobell Centre Sports Centre. With the move also came a new name which then they became known as Islington Boys Club.
In 1981, the club began to look for another site. Bovis Construction Company had an office block for the work they were doing for the construction of the Elthrone Park estate in Hazellville Road, N19.
To this day the club are still based in Hazellville Road and their long term plans are to secure a long term lease and redevelop their facility. The club aims to tackle the strict dispine of Boxing Training as well as keeping children, youth and young adults off the streets which has been a priority since it first began.
Information
Islington Boxing Club run competitive amateur boxing sessions three nights a week, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. Juniors times from 6pm-8pm and Seniors from 7pm-9pm.
The club utilised the ‘Recruit Into Coaching’ programme to qualify 7 new Level 1 Coaches who as volunteers helped to develop and deliver ‘Academy’ sessions for those new to the sport. The ‘Academy’ sessions have been a success with talented individuals filtering into the club sessions. These sessions run on Tuesdays and Thursday nights from 6pm-8pm.
In July 2010 Islington ABC became the first amateur boxing club in London to achieve ABAE Club Mark Accreditation.
As the club goes from strength to strength, it has won two valuable awards in 2010. The Mayor of Islington's Civic Award for contributions to the local community and Club Secretary Ron Hagland was named Volunteer of the Year at the recent Sport Islington Sports Awards.
Football section
As well as boxing, Islington Boys Club have a football section which is known as Islington Admiral United FC. Admiral, as they are commonly known, are an amateur football club based in Islington with most of their matches being played at Market Road Astroturf, N7. They have two senior sides which are based in the Islington Midweek Premiership, Islington Admiral United FC and Islington Boxing Club FC (formally known as Admiral 'B' team).
They also have six youth teams from Under-8s to Under-16s.
