The iPod touch can be jailbroken just like the iPhone. The reason why many people hack their iPod Touch is because they want to add features besides standard iPod usage and make it more like an iPhone. iPod Touch jailbreaking is usually a complicated process whenever a new firmware is released (downloading files and opening up Command Prompt), but as hackers get more used to the new firmware and finding security holes in the updates, the process is simpler (visiting a website on the iPod Touch to jailbreak). Jailbreaking installs AppTapp's Installer, and in some cases, the SSH app. Once jailbroken, the iPod files can be accessed through FTP programs for modification. The most notable reason why people access the iPod's main files is to add iPhone apps on it (Maps, Weather, Stocks, etc.).
Software Development Kit In response to the jailbreaking, Apple will be releasing a Software Development Kit (SDK) for third-party developers to make native apps for the iPod touch. The apps will be distributed through iTunes for a price and will most likely be synced to the iPod Touch just like Music, Videos, and Photos.
Internet Phone Usage? Currently, a hacker has hacked the iPod Touch's dock connector and put audio output working. If it can get to have both audio input and output, the Touch may be able to be used for internet phone service with Skype or Vonage.
