Interhall Council (IHC) is the residence student government at the University of Guelph. It holds one seat on the board of directors.
History Interhall Council is second largest student organization on campus after the CSA, and has been a part of the University of Guelph community since 1969. The IHC is responsible for representating students, advocation, and event planning for the 5000 residence students at the University of Guelph.
Structure The IHC consists of over 60 elected student representatives. The IHC Board, consisting of the various Hall Presidents and Central Executive, meet on a weekly basis. Each hall also holds weekly meetings facilitated by the Hall President and Hall Executives. Interhall is made up of an executive branch, a representative branch, ex-officio members, and the Guelph Residence Hall Honorary (GRHH).
Central Executive
The Central Executive is composed of 6 elected student executives who coordinate IHC as a whole. The Executive meets weekly separate from IHC meetings and each member has a distinct portfolio to fulfill.
*President: is the representative to the University Administration and outside community and is responsible for the operations of IHC as a Student Organization Registrar Group. *VP of Internal Affairs: is the support person for the President, and is responsible for the Progress Review Committee (PRC) and the committee representation for Interhall Council. *VP of Finance: is responsible for all Interhall funds, including overseeing the Hall budgets and Central Executive portfolios. *VP of Activities: is responsible for all IHC events, including overseeing the Hall Social Coordinators, and all Central IHC events. *VP of Communications: is IHC's representative to outside groups, in particular the Ontario Residence Hall Association (ORHA), and the Great Lakes Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (GLACURH). This person is also Interhall's representative on the Central Student Association (CSA) Board of Directors. *VP of Operations: is responsible for writing meeting minutes at IHC meetings and the organization and function of the IHC office. The VP of Operations is also the Editor-in-Chief of Herd the Werd and is responsible for the IHC website.
Hall Executives
The 12 residence halls each have a Hall Executive made up of three to five members, depending on the individual hall. Each Hall Executive is responsible for representing their respective halls to IHC and the community and planning hall events. The Hall President represents their halls at the weekly IHC meeting and is financially responsible for the hall. The Vice-President, Social Coordinator, Operations Manager and Public Relations Officer make up the other Executive positions. Their responsibilities, again, depending on the individual hall, include planning and administrating hall events, distributing hall clothing, recording meeting minutes and advertising hall events. Macdonald Hall has Senior Representatives as a part of their Executive. Most halls have Hall Executive positions that are open to first year students and are elected each year in September.
Hall Council
Each residence hall holds weekly Hall Council meetings where residence students can represent their section's views and help plan hall events.
Ex-Officio Members
IHC Ex-Officio members are non-elected IHC members who advise and assist with IHC business. This consists of the IHC Chairperson, IHC Advisor, and Guelph Residence Hall Honorary (GRHH) Coordinator.
The Interhall Chairperson facilitates the weekly IHC meetings and acts as an advisor to the IHC Executive. The Chair is an impartial member, and essential to Interhall. The Interhall advisor is normally a staff member from Student Housing Services. The advisor sits in on weekly IHC meetings, and assists IHC members as an impartial external counselor. The GRHH Coordinator is the chair of the GRRH committee and is responsible for the function of the Guelph Residence Hall Honorary program.
Activities Orientation Week (in conjunction with the Orientation Team)
Interhall assists in the recruitment, selection and training of Orientation Volunteers, the administration of new student move-in, and runs a large number of on-campus events. IHC members are also noticeable leaders on campus (wearing striped red, gold, and black socks) during Orientation Week who can provide security and answer questions. The individual Hall Councils are also charged with planning hall events, encouraging their students to get involved during the week, and creating the hall boogie for the legendary Pep Rally.
Campus Committees
IHC members sit on many committees committees throughout campus such as Residence Advisory Board, Hospitality Services Advisory Committee, Single Student Budget Committee, Students Rights & Responsibilities, Judicial and the Hearing Board. IHC has representation on over 30 committees relating to residence students.
