Indon

Indon is a short term for Indonesia and Indonesian, similar to Brit for Briton or British and Jap for Japan or Japanese, that was used widely in Southeast Asia to refer Indonesia or Indonesian for short.
In 2006, the people and government of Indonesia opposed Malaysian usage of the term that was assumed as insulting and derogatory.
Some Indonesian media has formerly used the term, as early as 1963 until 1981 however now the term is no longer in usage.
Due to the matter, Indonesian government via Information & Humanity Secretary (Sekretaris I Penerangan & Humas KBRI ) Eka A. Suripto stated that Indonesian ambassador given an official protest to the Malaysian Ambassador in Indonesia on 13 May 2007. Malaysian government later reacted by prohibiting local media from using this term officially by Malaysian Ministry Of Information on 25 May 2007.

It was used as an abbreviation in the 1829 The Encyclopedia Americana‎ by Bernard S. Cayne, Robert S Anderson, Sue R Brandt. The term is not used in Australia to describe Indonesians, although the word "Indon" has been used as a written abbreviation of "Indonesia" to save space in headlines in the following examples (but the abbreviation is not used in the text). i.e. The Sydney Morning Herald, Brisbanetimes and AAP General News (Australia) Australian Associated Press, the AAP General News is the largest originator of news and information in Australia. AAP provides extensive coverage of matters concerning the nation of Australia from local to national news.
The abbreviation is also used in The New Encyclopædia Britannica 1998, in The World Almanac and Book of Facts 2003, and by The World Almanac and Book of Facts 1999.
Today RI (acronym for Republik Indonesia) or Indo is the common acceptable abbreviation for Indonesia, however "Indo" outside of Indonesian speaker context often refer to India while in older Indonesian generation context can refer to Indonesian Eurasian (orang Indo). To refer for Indonesian people or Indonesian citizen, orang Indonesia or WNI, acronym for Warga Negara Indonesia (citizen of Indonesia), is commonly acceptable.
