Indiconews is a user-generated social news website. The company is based in Canterbury, England, and was founded by Elizabeth Hodgson, in 2007. Goals The aim of the site is to create a greater sense of identity within the news process where the audience is no longer passive in the news agenda but part of an ongoing conversation. Indiconews employs new features such as the ability for registered members to interview third parties or other signed-up users, then correlate the interviews to news reports, providing a two-way dialogue between experts and journalists. The subsequent interview can then be edited to suit the report, but the readers are free to view the full interview so that no quotations can be taken out of context. Indiconews also lets members customize how they receive their news - allowing a user to set up filters for their news based on combinations of category and location, ensuring they receive information most relevant to them. The site uses an assignment system, which allows readers to request news and information from indiconews community on topics that they want know more about, allowing for a direct dialogue between reporters and readers while drawing on a wider pool of knowledge. Technology Indiconews is built on open source software tools and uses Geonames for as its geographical data back-end and Pylons along with SQLAlchemy as the core technologies used to develop and maintain the site.
