Indians-Tigers rivalry

The Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers have been playing each other since 1901 when the two teams joined the American League. The two teams have been in the same division since they began play in Major League Baseball. The Indians have played more games against the Tigers than any other team just like the Tigers have played more games against the Indians than any other team. Cleveland and Detroit are separated by less than a three hour drive.
The rivalry was intense in the 1940's and the 1950's when both teams were frequent contenders for the American League pennant. In 1940 the Indians were only one game behind the Tigers for the American League pennant. In 1945 the Tigers won the American League pennant while the Indians won the American league pennant in 1948 . In 1949 and 1950 the Indians and Tigers both had winning seasons and were both within 10 games of the American League Pennant in both years. In 1954 the Indians won 111 games and won the American League pennant while the Tigers were 43 games behind. In 1956 the two teams both had winning seasons. The rivalry intensified in 2007 when both teams were contending for the American League Central with the Indians prevailing. In 2008 both teams got in a brawl when Fausto Carmona hit Gary Sheffield with a pitch leading to Sheffield charging the mound. Cleveland and Detroit are less than 3 hours away by car. There also is a natural rivalry between Ohio and Michigan mainly because of the rivalry in College Football between Ohio State and Michigan. This is an intense rivalry because of geographic proximity, the competitiveness of the games and that the game is a good draw in attendance for both the Indians and the Tigers.
