Doctor Ian Pincombe (Birthdate unknown) (also known as Ian Devine) is a Lecturer of British Social History at Cardiff University in Wales. However, he is not only an academic, and is known musically as Ian Devine. In this guise he is a guitarist and song writer. He lives in Cardiff, Wales. He is best known for his work with the group Ludus featuring Linder Sterling's vocals, and the records he produced with the singer Alison Statton herself formerly of the groups Weekend and Young Marble Giants.
His guitar work with Ludus was very jazz inflected, and showed great dexterity and a penchant for melodies that could swing from lyrical and almost wistful to angular and angry. After Ludus split, he returned to Wales and formed Heb Gariad, who signed to the Welsh-language Anrhefn label. In 1992, he played with Cardiff group Low Gods. From there, he began working with Alison Statton. This work was much different, and was of a decidedly more "folk" music bent, with clear and largely unprocessed vocals, acoustic guitars, violin, and bass often dominating the arrangements. A notable effort was their acoustic rendering of the New Order dance hall hit, "Bizarre Love Triangle".
In 2000, he completed a Ph.D at Cardiff University, entitled '"Out of Rexville": G. F. Lovell and the South Wales Confectionery Industry, c. 1830-1940' A year later, he again worked with Linder Sterling releasing a 7 track CD, Requiem.
In June 2004 Ludus reformed for two shows at the Royal Festival Hall in London, as part of the Morrissey-curated Meltdown Festival. Backed by a group of picked Cardiff musicians, Ian and Linder delivered two sets of re-arranged Ludus classics, once opening for Nancy Sinatra (20 June) and once for Morrissey himself (25 June).
