Hunslet Hall is a social services building in south Leeds. The office houses social work teams covering the whole of south Leeds and includes teams working with adults and children.
The building is a converted primary school, and the age of the building is often a topic of criticism for people who work there, many of whom feel they should be afforded a modern purpose built building.
History
Hunslet Hall was called Hunslet Hall Primary school from the date of its original building in 1953 until it was closed and taken over as a Leeds City council building in 1984. The building was considered too old and unsafe for the primaryt school children who schooled there and they were relocated to a new school, Beeston Primary, after the school was closed.
The building was not used by Leeds City council in its early years and it wasn't until 1989 when, following some restoration, the building was reopened as a social services office. South Leeds social workers had been housed at Tempest Road office about a mile away but all were relocated to the "new" building in 1989.
Social work teams were housed there and social workers remain working there to this day, though there have been many changes to personnel and organisation of the services since its original opening.
Current set-up at Hunslet Hall
The building currently houses three children and families social work teams and two adult teams. The childcare teams consist of one "assessment" team and two "care management" teams. The assessment team deals with new referrals to social services as and when they come in. The social workers in these teams often have to go out on emergencies when emergency referrals are made to social services. The assessment teams hold cases for up to six months before the cases are closed or passed to longer term teams. The two care management teams deal with families where longer term social worker involvement is needed, they often work with children in long term care and children on the child protection register.
