Hospital de San Carlos

Hospital de San Carlos is a hospital in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
Hospital history
In 1870, Nicolás del Pino, family of the founder of the city, donated one of his properties for the construction of the Hospital for the commune, where it is currently located.
It was inaugurated on February 15, 1874, and was a 2-story building made of wood and adobe parts, which, although it survived the 1906 earthquake in Valparaiso and 1928 in Talca, was seriously damaged by the 1939 earthquake In Chillán.
By 1949, there were already 5,388 square meters built. Among the first professionals who were part of the hospital's history were the Pharmaceutical Chemist Auristela Muñoz (1938), Matrona Mercedes Veas (1940) and Social Worker Olivia Muñoz (1946).
On February 27, 2010, the strong earthquake that struck the country caused serious damage to the hospital, destroying the upper floors (4 and 5), leaving the rest of the hospital with serious damage.
Reconstruction
In December 2012 began the reconstruction of the hospital, where a work was done to restore the two towers, in addition to other improvements after the earthquake. This work took approximately one year to be completed and in March 2014 the final delivery was made.
Current square footage
The hospital has about 18,000 square meters built and has plans for growth.
Accreditation
The Hospital de San Carlos is accredited under the General Accreditation Standard for Institutional Providers of Care. It is one of 14 accredited public hospitals in the country.
