There are many methods of travel in India, e.g. by train, aircraft,
buses but there is one means of transport that is least talked about.
It is the most convenient and safest may be with a hire car and driver.
Indian roads seem chaotic and frightening to Western visitors, but an
experienced local driver manages them with ease and grace.
Aside from the convenience of travelling to precisely where you wish
to go, you are saved the trouble of personally negotiating managements
for further travel, saving countless hours of frustration and waiting.
More, the driver does much more than drive. He (there are no female
drivers, but experienced male drivers are very reliable) knows where
all the facilities you might need ( Dentists, Dr.s, hospitals, eye
specialists), where the best hotels and restaurants suited to your
needs are located, and he places your requirements before everything
else.
Cars with drivers can be hired through Indian travel agents or hotels,
but there are some new services where you deal directly with the
driver, thus eliminating the middlemen. It is surprisingly cost
competitive with other means of travel in the sub continent.
Taxicabs in India are mostly Premier Padmini, Ambassador, Indica, Toyota Innova.
Taxis and all other commercial vehicles have a yellow number plate.
Another kind of taxi is radio texi. Radio taxi service is currently more pronounced
in the major metros of the country. The service is also observing a growing
demand for better quality of service,specially with respect to billing in tier II cities.
Indian government is also promoting Indian taxi in other countries
like Japan where a promotional event was organized by Govt. of India.
