Hellgate Harmonie is a New York City amateur wind ensemble consisting of oboes, bassoons, clarinets, a double bass, a French horn and a contrabassoon. They perform in relaxed environments such as beer gardens, most notably Bohemian Beer Garden in Astoria, bars, and restaurants. Origin Of Name By way of explanation, "Hellgate" is the name of the confluence of the the Harlem and East Rivers off the coast of Astoria in New York City. The Hell Gate Bridge is near where they started their series of performances at the Bohemian Hall Beer Garden during the Summer of 2005. "Harmonie" describes a late 18th, early 19th Century wind band prevalent in Viennese, Bohemian and Moravian court society. Mozart was perhaps its best known practitioner. Hellgate Harmonie has now become well known among the New York City's musician circuit, especially for those who play a wind instrument. |
