Heather Anne Harder

Dr. Heather Anne Harder (b. March 21948, Henderson, Tennessee) was a candidate of the Democratic Party for the office of President of the United States in the 2000 election.

The fact that Dr. Harder has held no prior elected office she has claimed as "her greatest asset." Her campaign literature quotes her as saying, "Being President is not something I desire to do but I cannot sit idly by, while my rights and freedoms are being eroded away by a government gone mad. We don't need another hero in Washington. We the people must take responsibility." She has described herself as a "Jeffersonian Democrat" and a vegetarian.

In her book Interdimensional Communication, she has claimed to be in communication with the spirits of Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John F. Kennedy, and Franklin Roosevelt, who helped her develop her position on Social Security, among others. Regarding this, she has written, "My abilities are not new to the White House. George Washington spoke to angels. Jefferson talked to cloaked figures who 'disappeared into the night.' Lincoln spoke to the spirit world through mediums. He said they gave him great comfort during such turbulent times. This list could go on and on. Many of our greatest leaders have been connected to this divine source of guidance. I will not introduce spirituality to the Oval Office. I will only make it acceptable to talk about it again."

Her platform included positions against gun control, NAFTA and GATT; for an unregulated Internet; and favoring the repeal of the 16th Amendment, abolishing the income tax. "In its place I would institute a fair consumption or sales tax on non-necessity times, which would fund our government at its current spending level without the need for the IRS." On her campaign website (since abandoned), her quoted Cicero (without citation), "The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance."

Unlike many presidential candidates, Dr. Harder took pride in putting her platform in writing and standing by it, in the form of a number of online position papers, including hot-button issues like abortion, drugs, crime, Medicare and the death penalty. Unlike almost all candidates, one of these papers outlines her stance on UFOs: "I believe we are not alone. The family of God is much larger than most of us, including Steven Spielberg, can even imagine. Daily hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of contacts are being made which prepare us to meet our cosmic neighbors. How many more need to occur before we acknowledge them as real?"

Dr. Harder earned her Ph.D. in education from Indiana State University, specializing in elementary education and writing her doctoral thesis on nonverbal communication in the classroom. She later worked as a professor of education at Governors State University, Illinois. She divorced her husband of 26 years in 1997.
