Health food coach

A health food coach or "health coach" is a person who is hired to guide, direct, consult with and teach a client or a group of clients how to transition what they eat into healthy choices, both at home and when eating outside the home. A food coach may have as much knowledge as a nutritionist or herbalist without the same certification. They can still be helpful, however, as the coach's training is to improve diet and lifestyle choices whatever level those they are coaching are at. A health food coach can be used in conjunction with other forms of medical assistance. Typically the focus is on exercise and making healthier whole food choices. The health coach can provide education and support to an individual desiring to make healthy lifestyle changes.

Hippocrates said "let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food". It is surprising to many people that doctors take the "Hippocratic Oath" yet know next to nothing when it comes to healing with food and nutrition in the correction and prevention of many diseases. Many seek the help of a health coach as an alternative to Western medical doctors who are geared to treat disease symptoms with pharmaceuticals, instead of looking into the daily diet of each patient to see what the source of his/her nutrition and deficiency is. The U.S. population is highly obese and overweight, including a high percentage of children.

Documentary films such as Supersize Me have helped to show that the effects of eating 'fast food' can de dangerous.

A food coach can interview a new client, go into his/her kitchen, advise on what to remove from the shelves and refrigerator, advise on appliances and tools to obtain, guide her during a grocery trip and teach her how to read labels and how to use the store aisles, where to shop. They can provide inspiration and encouragement, all while educating the individual or group for enhanced future choices.
