HB 5005 is one of those bills which are a bit hard to understand... It's on par with putting housing units for pedophiles in kindergardens.
The bill aims at deregulating some of the most scandalous companies you can think of. These include businesses such as the ones specializing in telemarketing this industry alone generates some of the biggest amount of complaints each year, as a matter of fact it's in the top 5 list of worst offenders.
Supporters of this bill say that strict regulations are not necessary and hinder small businesses. But if we look at the bill in more detail we'll see
that it actually protects those businesses because it keeps crooked companies out of the market (which is good news to consumers and honest business owners alike). Telemarketing companies should have a barrier to entry, but this bill aims at removing just that. It's going to remove the requirements for protective measures such as licensing and surety bonds amongst other things.
What can you do to stop this?
Go to sites like www.callercenter.com and file complaints against those telemarketers. The web-site is dedicated to showing that bill HB 5005 is a grave mistake..
too bad that this is one of the few sites which actually does something about the issue. Also don't forget to follow up with a complaint with the FCC, the more complaints they amass the better the chances that no other similar bill will see the light of day. You can also contact your house representatives or even send a letter Rep. Dorothy Hukill, R-Port Orange who was kind enough to pass this bill. If you live in the state of Florida you should be even more concerned with this Bill. You will be getting a lot more of those annoying phone calls from telemarketers. Mark my words...
