Harvesting chives (), spelled 'ge jiucai' in Hanyu Pinyin, alternatively translated as cutting leeks, is a Chinese Internet buzzword that originally refers to chives having reached their peak growth stage and ready to be harvested.
The word "chive" originally came from the Chinese stock market. The chive is a very tough plant, and even if a farmer cuts off the leaves with a knife, they will grow back soon afterwards. The term "chive" is used in Chinese market circle to refer to the fact that in the eyes of big market players, there is always a constant stream of new retail investors to be cut into the market, and these people are called "chives". In short, "harvesting chives" means that big investors "harvest" retail investors.
The term "harvesting chives" has been extended to describe all forms of abuse, such as 996 working hour system, "financial management" courses by online gurus who promise to enrich their mentees.
