Happy Is a Yuppie Word is a song from San Diego Rock band Switchfoot's fifth Studio album, Nothing Is Sound.
It was originally slated to be the lead single from the record, and the band even shot a music video for its release. But the band's record label, SonyBMG elected to go with Stars instead, because that song was deemed more marketable than the darkly-themed "Yuppie." Stylistically, the song is a bit of a departure from previous Switchfoot albums, and is a prime example of the "darker" feel of "Nothing Is Sound."
The bridge of this song is also the inspiration for the title of the album.
Song Story About the song, Switchfoot's frontman Jon Foreman said:
A year ago, I had a late night talk with a friend who stated the quote: "Happy is a yuppie word." I stayed up after he left, turned off the TV war and wrote a song about our happy, yuppie world. Turns out, Bob Dylan was the one being quoted.
Music Video The music video was originally leaked online but was never officially released to tv outlets. It was later released on Switchfoot's self-made DVD, Switchfootage 2.
The concept is very similar to Switchfoot's video for Stars, with the band playing underwater. This may be because it was also directed by the same person, Scott Speer.
