Hakim Hammad Usmani

Hakim Hammad Usmani, was a Unani Physician of repute, and belonged to the family of Unani Physicians. He was born on 20th April, 1928 at Allahabad. His father Hakim Ahmad Usmani was awarded the title of (Healer of the Nation) by the Britishers inspite of the known opposition of his family against the British rule in India. His grand father Allama Hakim Ahmad Hussain founded and established the Unani Medical College, Allahabad in 1904 and managed it from his own resources without raising any donation etc.

Life & honours

He was honoured and recognised on both National and International levels but as per his humble character which was the true resemblance of his greatness, allowed fame to rest lightly on his shoulders. He shunned publicity.

Hakim Hammad Usmani Sahib was one of those exceptional individuals who spent their entire lifetime (1928-2000) consolidating, strengthening and rejuvenating the base of Unani System of Medicine. Althuogh qualified in the Modern System of Medicine(Allopathy) as well, he preffered to practice Unani Medicine. He was always dedicated to Unani System by contributing to Unani Pharmacy, Unani Publications, Unani Education etc. In the process he himself came to be recognized as a chapter in Unani History.

Dr. Hammad Usmani, was a retired Principal/Superintendent of Unani Medical College & H.A.H.R.D.M. Hospital, Allahabad, and had been the Dean, Faculty of Ayurvedic & Unani Medicine, Kanpur University, Kanpur. Dr. Usmani, was also on the Scientific Advisory Committee of CCRUM of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, and member of Unani Pharmacopea Committee of G.O.I. New Delhi and associated with various Govt. & Non-Govt. organisations working for Unani & Ayurvedic Medicine in India.

He was famous for his diagnostic skills and treatment in Unani System of Medicine and had been Unani Physician to the Governor of U.P. His Excellency (Late) Mohd. Usman Arif. Besides thousands have benefitted by his treatment who were declared incurable by other physicians.

He was also an able administrator, who administrered Unani Medical College Allahabad very efficiently throughout his entire tenure as Principal and it was because of his efficient administration that Unani Medical College and H.A.H.R.D.M Hospital Allahabad had reached the zenith of its glory at that time. Late Dr. Hammad Usmani's administration was widely applauded, even the erstwhile Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Late Chaudhary Charan Singh and the then Health Minister, Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Anwar Ahmad had praised the administration of Dr. Usmani during one of the students upheaval in Uttar Pradesh. During his entire regime as Principal he was always busy constructing buildings in the College and expanding various departments. Infact, the building of Unani Medical College and Hospital, Allahabad which creates a deep impression on the visitor to this college, is the contribution of Late Dr. Hammad Usmani.

Dr. Hammad Usmani had authored several books in Urdu on Unani Medicine, which is a valuable contribution to Unani Medicine, and has produced many Unani Scholars scattered all over India and abroad. Dr. Hammad Usmani, also founded and established the 'Usmania Academy', Allahabad from which he got published the books he had authored and compiled.

Besides Unani professional instituions, he was also attached to various education and non Unani Institutions serving the cause of Humanity. He was also associated with Rotary in a big way.

Dr. Hammad Usmani, passed away on 30 Dec, 2000 at Allahabad leaving his eldest son Dr. Saad Usmani to further consolidate the cause he worked for. Hammad Sahib was 72. Dr. Saad Usmani is himself a Unani Physician and presently Reader & HOD Kulliyat(Basic Principles of Unani Medicine) at State Unani Medical College Allahabad.
