Gwynne Pugh Urban Studio

Gwynne Pugh Urban Studio (GP-US) is an architecture and urban design firm based in Santa Monica, California. Gwynne Pugh is the sole principal, and his firm is structured so that he can participate in each project Urban Studio undertakes.
History & Founding
In late 2010, Gwynne Pugh left Pugh + Scarpa, the award winning firm he co-founded in 1991 to start his own firm. In its 22 years under Gwynne Pugh and Lawrence Scarpa’s leadership, Pugh + Scarpa won over 50 local, state and national AIA awards, including the 2010 AIA Firm of the Year award. In the same year, Gwynne was inducted into the College of Fellows of the AIA. Established in 2010, Gwynne Pugh Urban Studio was born out of Gwynne Pugh’s desire to explore urban design in more detail that he was able to at Pugh + Scarpa. Aside from furthering cutting edge design, the firm is looking to expand more to interacting with cities to generate placemaking by focusing on the intersection between planning and architecture.
Innovation & Sustainable Design
Gwynne Pugh has more than a decade of experience on a wide variety of sustainable projects. As senior principal at Pugh Scarpa Kodama (a collaboration between Pugh + Scarpa and Kodama Diseno), the firm designed the Colorado Court affordable housing project in downtown Santa Monica which became not only the first building of its type in the country to be energy neutral, but also the first of its kind to receive a LEED Gold rating. The project received numerous awards since its completion in 2002, including the 2003 AIA COTE ‘Top Ten Green Building’ Award, National Housing Award and the 2003 National AIA Design Award. Other major sustainable projects Gwynne has been involved in throughout his career include: Lofts at Cherokee Studio, Step Up on Fifth, Bergamot Station Arts Complex and Artists’ Lofts, Sisquieros Mural, Rosa Parks Multi-family housing and many others.
