The gut-wrenching scream (titled "Screams 3; Man, Gut-wrenching Scream And Fall Into Distance" on the compilation Hollywood Edge Premiere Edition, volume 13) is an often-used sound effect. It has been featured in Broken Arrow, Last Action Hero, Star Wars: Dark Forces, Starcraft, as a Half-Life 2 zombie moan and , among others. It is also known as The Howie Long Scream, because of the popularity of Broken Arrow during its time. It is believed that Soundelux co-founder, Lon Bender created the sound effect. Its first known appearance is in the movie, The Ninth Configuration, during a barroom brawl scene near the end. Like the Wilhelm Scream, it is an inside joke among sound engineers.
