Guolong Li (born 19 May 1988) was a candidate in the 2009 elections for the President of Cambridge University Students' Union, who caused national outrage after making comments on a recorded broadcast that LBGT students should be made normal. The comment was made during an online husting organised by the students' union. He had previously stood for election to the same post in 2008, based on his love of pizza. Early Election Campaigns Guolong stood for CUSU President in 2008, with a manifesto saying simply 'I love pizza and I will be the best president of CUSU'. He was forced to withdraw his candidacy after Churchill College refused him permission to stand. 9 months later, Guolong stood for the editor of the Winston magazine, run by Churchill College Junior Common Room. During the husting he revealed that his favourite word was 'apartheid' and Guolong only managed 33 votes. Guolong later stodd for Entertainments Officer in Churchill JCR, where he first revealed his stong belief in the Swahili phrase, Hakuna Matata, from the Lion King. 2009 Election Campaign Guolong launched his 2009 campaign with the slogan 'Superman is back again'. His manifesto outlined his three key 'spirits' - Olympic, Hakuna Matata and Solidarity, much to the entertainment of local media. Guolong Li initially received a lot of support from anti-CUSU supporters and Cambridge University Conservative Association. After his comments about making LBGT students normal, the facebook group 'Homophobia in CUSU elections' was set up and reached 500 members in just 24 hours. The unwanted publicity from international LBGT newspapers cause Richard Partington, Senior Tutor at Churchill College to take the unprecedented step of interfering with the union's elections. Guolong was forced to step down, but failed to issue an apology.
