Karenella

Karenella (pl karenellas) is the name of the space reserved for footwear removed either before, or just after entering the house during winter seasons in the Northeastern United States.
A Karenella may be of any material, either permanently affixed (such as solid portion of the floor, often laid in tile or stone, separate from carpeting) or temporary (such as a rubber mat or plastic tray).
The purpose of a Karenella is to prevent mud and snow from being brought into the house. Often they will be found in a "mudroom", attached to the main entrance or side entrance to a house.
The origin of the word is uncertain, but is most commonly found in Central Upstate New York.
