Gunk subculture

Gunk subculture
The gunk subculture is a subculture that takes ideas and fundamentals from both the punk subculture and geek ideas. It has emerged from its parent punk subculture and has since become its own culture. Gunks take varieties of styles from both of its roots and merge them into one.

History
The gunk subculture originated in the early 2000's, and has developed further into the present day. It consists of people who wish to be punk but still want to earn the respect of others. Gunks typically are males, and usually the scrawnier type. They can range from almost any age group, however, the most common group is from 14-25 years old. Gunks use a variety of ideas and lifestyles from its parent punk subculture, such as ideas, music, clothing, dance, and film and fuse it along with ideas of geeks. By many other punks, this subculture is not punk, but for those that are Gunk, it is definitely a true culture.

Ideology
Gunks' ideology ranges from Gunk to Gunk, but typically they keep the basic punk mindset. They do what they do and not care what anyone thinks of them. Gunks tend to be anti-racist, believe personal choice is the best choice, and to be proud of who they are. However, Gunks also believe to show respect to all women. They show this by constantly being nice to any woman that they see, from holding open doors for them, to giving their coats when it is cold, to carrying books to class for them. Gunks also believe to be nice to everyone that they see. However, problems do occur when Gunks meet antagonizing individuals. If a Gunk is faced with another that is antagonistic towards them, they are not afraid to lash back out at them, returning to their punk roots.

Gunks also believe in being proud of who and what they are. If a Gunk is faced with an individual that is antagonistic, they will most likely tell the person that they do not care what they think of them because they are who they are. An example of this would be like an individual telling a Gunk that a band sucks. The Gunk would most likely respond by telling the individual "Okay, whatever." Depending on the Gunk, the response may or may not be taken to the extreme. Other Gunks might tell the individual the same response, but do other drastic things as well.

Gunks also take geek ideas, such as film and video game fanaticism, and take it to the extreme, with no worries. Gunks tend to usually be quiet, undistracting people. They also range from being actors to film directors, to graphic design artists.

Music
Gunk music ranges drastically. Music can range from typical punk music, such as Green Day and The Misfits, to metal music such as System of a Down and Metallica. Gunk music also tends to include soundtracks from films and video games that they like. Some Gunks even listen to older music, such as Elvis Presley and The Beatles.

Fashion
Gunks typically take the fashion from the parent punk subculture. Gunks take Converse sneakers, tight pants, neckties, large belts, and band shirts from punk and fuse it with geek styles such as video game and film shirts. A typical Gunk would wear any color of Converse sneakers, with tighter fitting pants, a shirt from their favorite film, a necktie, and a large belt. Gunks typically do not spike their hair, or go to extremes with their hairstyle. They typically have medium-length hair, but can be shorter. Gunks also do not receive bizarre piercings like the punk subculture does. However, Gunks do wear eyeliner and eye-shadow from time to time. Gunks also do not typically get tattoos, either, but can from time to time.

Film
Gunk film is where Gunk strays the farthest from the punk subculture. This is where it receives most of its geek roots from. Gunks tend to like films that are "geeky", such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Star Trek, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Gunks also typically get confused with nerds. Just because a Gunk knows every line to Star Wars, does not mean that they are a nerd. Gunks take a pride in their favorite films and will let other people know about it.

Interactions With Popular Culture
Typically to the popular culture, Gunks are seen as outcasts. Usually other individuals look down upon them as geeks and un-capable of doing anything at all. Truth is, most Gunks earn an average 3.6 GPA in high school and college. Because Gunks are typically quiet and creative individuals, it is easy for others to try and discourage them. A basic response by the Gunk is to ignore other individuals that do it. They are proud of who they are, and do not let other people make fun of them. If antagonized enough, the Gunk will typically get violent with the other individual, usually not turning out well for the other individual. Gunks are usually underestimated, until antagonized. Gunks also tend to be girl-less. Because of being nice and courteous to every woman that they see, Gunks are usually just seen as friends. However, there are exceptions every once in a while. Sometimes, others actually see Gunks for who they actually are: nice people who are nice to everyone, but just a little bit mistreated by the rest of the world.
