Grim Dark is an oft parodied genre of novels, role playing games and more. It is believed to originate in the Warhammer 40k universe, that has also been described as gothic space fantasy. The phrase Grim Dark is a cut down version of "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.", often cited as "In the grim darkness there is only war" and other variations, most simply replacing war with other nouns. Grim Dark often counterparts Gothic fiction by a lack of romance, whilst keeping most of the imagery. Grim dark settings in media is often accompanied by the insignificance of individuals in the face of constant war, crime and an uncaring dystopian utilitarian law. |
