Google duel

A Google duel is a search term popularity contest typically using the internet search engine Google as a judge (though other engines can be used). This is done in order to compare the frequency of use of certain words or phrases on the internet. Dedicated sites exist to facilitate such comparisons.

As a research tool
Websites that use google dueling, such as Googlefight and googleduel.com, have been used by researchers as a tool to enable language learners to analyse the frequency of similar terms or phrases in order to choose the variant most likely to be used by a native speaker. For example, "in French, non-natives will have problems with such as: “revenir du/de Paris”(here, it’s de), compared with ‘revenir du/de Japon” (here, it’s du)". Therefore, it is useful to be able to "scan through several pages and statistically determine the most prominent usage".
