A GFV or "Grand Final Viewing" is a predominantly Australian term used to describe an event that celebrates the AFL . Similar to a US Super Bowl party, the GFV is hosted at various members homes or commercial venues yearly. History The use of the term "grand" to describe a sporting event in Australia dates back to the 1850s.The GFV is held on the same day and has been held in various forms since that time. Only since 1990 has it been commonly referred to as a "Grand Final Viewing" and the notion of rotating the event amongst various members of the public become well known. Activities The GFV celebrates the sport of Australian rules football and involves a traditional kick to kick at the half time break. All members of the party are involved in this event. In addition to excite children and non footy participants a sweep is run to award prizes for the following: - First player goal - Second player goal - Third player goal - Norm Smith medalist Player lists from the daily paper are distributed among the attendees. Food and Drink Unlike most BBQs, a GFV seeks to emulate the traditional football fare that may be found at a game. This consists of pies, snags, chips and tomato sauce]. Controversies There is an ongoing discussion about hosting the Grand Final at night. Any moves to change the GF to a night game would have serious implications for the traditional GFV. Season 2008 has seen the AFL schedule two night preliminary finals which appeal to TV networks and audiences in non AFL states.
